Popcorn-eating Monsters are meeting in the Library!

Yes, the P.E.M. club had their first meeting last night.   Among other things (snacking, gabbing, planning!) we shared our favorite reads from the summer.  Here's a sampling of the books we've enjoyed reading this summer---as you'll see, we're a varied group, and our choices are all over the map, from re-visiting series that we started back when we were younger, to exploring cutting-edge YA titles, to reading some stuff off of the adult fiction shelves. One thing we all have in common, though--we love to read, and we love to talk about it!

S. spent part of her summer reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien.  She LOVED it (yay!) and is totally looking forward to the Hobbit movie in December--we all are!

H. really enjoyed reading Stealing Magic by Marianne Malone.  It's the sequel to a book she read a few years ago, The 68 Rooms. If you enjoyed that one, and haven't read the sequel, give this one a try!

A. has been reading the "Matched" series by Ally Condie.  She loves this dystopian adventure.  So does C.D., who read them last year.  They are both eagerly awaiting the third book in the series, Reached--due out in November!

N., on the other hand, likes to explore some of the books on the adult fiction shelves.  He's tried Stephen King, but finds that he prefers the creepy suspense of Dean Koontz.  Better him than me---I don't sleep so well after reading Koontz!

C.J. did TONS of reading this summer! She blazed her way through ALL of the Warriors books by Erin Hunter, read the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares and finished up the Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins, too! She liked all of them so much she couldn't decide which one to bring in.
C.D. was hooked by the contemporary-issue YA novel Trafficked by Kim Purcell.  This page-turner offers a  harrowing description of life as an illegal immigrant nanny brought from Moldavia to southern California.

Whatever you enjoy reading, we'd love to have you join us--we meet the 4th Wednesday of each month (occasionally we reschedule around a holiday!) at the library.  Call (673-2288) or email (shydorn@amherst.lib.nh.us) Miss Sarah if you'd like some more information!

Archery in Motion visits the library!

We're trying out the skills that Will and Halt practice in The Ranger's Apprentice books!

On a hot afternoon in July, we were treated to a visit from Mike and Dan Bolduc of Archery in Motion.  In the cool basement meeting room, we were introduced to the equipment that might have been used by the characters we encounter in John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series.  Mike and Dan were not only full of information about archery in general, but they had read the books, and were absolutely excellent about relating their program to the series.  Once we were done talking, we headed out into the heat to try our hands at some target practice.  Under the capable direction of Mike and Dan, each of us managed to hit the target at least once, and we had a blast--everyone just wished we could have kept going all afternoon!

School's out, and it's time for SUMMER READING!! Make sure to come down to the library and sign up--it only takes a minute, and it means that you'll be earning chances to win some cool prizes whenever you read.
There are some great programs going on just for teens, too:

on Thursday July 12 at 1:00 PM

Archery in Motion meets the Ranger's Apprentice
Join the instructors from Archery-in-Motion and Miss Sarah from the library for an afternoon program mash-up introducing the wonderful world of archery and the exciting book series, The Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan.
We'll listen to some excerpts of archery-action from the books, and then get a chance to see, hear about, and get our hands on the real thing.  Weather permitting, we may even get a chance to get outside and try to hit a target!
Maybe you'll decide you want to learn more about archery--maybe you'll decide you want to read this wonderful series--we hope you'll do both!
Space is limited, so please register early.  For kids who will be entering 6th grade and up.

'Dreamsleeves' Book and Craft Program for Teens
In celebration of our summer theme, 'Dream Big---Read', we'll be reading Dreamsleeves a wonderful new book by Coleen Paratore.  Like Aislinn, the main character, we'll be thinking about our dreams, talking about our dreams, and then decorating the t-shirts we bring in to reflect those dreams.  If you love to read, you'll love this book---if you love craft projects, you'll love embellishing your t-shirt.  Either way, come and join us for this one-time event!  Space is limited, so please register as early as possible.  Copies of the book will be available beginning July 9.  Please bring a t-shirt of your choice (preferably long-sleeved) with you, to decorate--all other materials will be provided. For kids entering grades 6 and up.

Once we've created our culinary masterpieces, we'll eat lunch right here at the library---either inside or outside, weather permitting. Space is limited, so please register early!
